Ginger Lily (Hedychium coronarium) also called White Butterfly Ginger or Sontakka, is Indias national flower of Hedychium species — producing clusters of pure white, intensely fragrant butterfly-shaped blooms on tall, lush canes. Beloved in Indian gardens.

Plant rhizomes 2-3 inches deep in rich, moist soil. Partial shade to partial sun. Space 18-24 inches apart as plants grow large. Best planted at start of monsoon (June). Requires consistent moisture.
Keep soil consistently moist during growing season. Tolerates partial shade well. Feed with nitrogen-rich fertilizer monthly in summer. Cut back canes after flowering. Divide in spring every 2-3 years.
Blooms summer to autumn (July-October). Spectacular white flower clusters atop 120-180 cm stems. Intensely fragrant — perfumes large areas. Excellent for cut flowers and garlands. Hummingbird magnet.
